Inbound linking agent: Strengthen your pages' authority through internal backlinks

This agent identifies the pages on your site that should link to your target content, and writes the insertion paragraphs ready to integrate.

At a glance

  • What you'll do: Identify pages on your site that should link to your target content, and get written insertion paragraphs ready to integrate.
  • Time required: 5 to 10 minutes per page analyzed.
  • Ideal for: Content managers and SEO writers who want to strengthen the topical authority of their strategic pages through structured internal backlinking.

What is it for?

In a semantic cocoon strategy, outbound links are only half the equation. It's the internal inbound links, the ones other pages on your site send to your content, that truly transfer authority and signal to Google the importance of a page within your architecture.

Yet most teams focus on optimizing the content itself and overlook this lever: pillar pages remain isolated, new publications receive no support from existing pages, and topical authority fragments instead of consolidating.

This agent reverses the logic: rather than starting from your content and linking outward, it starts from the outside and links toward your target page. It explores your site, identifies relevant parent, sibling, and child pages, checks for the absence of existing links, then writes insertion paragraphs that integrate naturally into the flow of each source page, with no artificial call-to-action language.

Good to know ℹ️: This agent complements the advanced internal linking agent. One optimizes outbound links from your page, the other optimizes inbound links toward your page. Used together, they cover your entire linking strategy.

What you'll get

For each opportunity identified, the agent produces a structured entry including:

  • The relationship type between the source page and your target page (upward, lateral).
  • The URL and title of the source page.
  • The precise placement for inserting the link in the source page (H2 section, paragraph number).
  • A written 30–50 word paragraph, with the HTML link already formatted and an anchor optimized for the target keyword, ready to paste directly into your CMS.

How to do it

1) Prepare the prompt

First, replace [__site.com__] in the prompt with your site's root domain. This is the only change needed.

Tip ✅: If you work across multiple sites, duplicate the agent and set up one version per domain. You'll save time on every use.

2) Create the custom agent

In the Semji editor, navigate to the AI+ Agents feature and create a new agent with the following settings:

  • Name: Inbound linking expert
  • Instructions: Copy and paste the prompt below (after replacing [__site.com__]).
  • Tools to enable:
    • ✅ Retrieve SEO recommendations
    • ✅ Google search
    • ✅ Get web page content

[PROMPT]

Click Create to save your agent.

3) Run the analysis

Open the content you want to strengthen in the Semji editor, make sure the Focus Keyword is set, then launch the agent. It automatically analyzes your target page, explores your site, and audits candidate pages.

Click Run to start the analysis.

4) Read and apply the output

Recommendation entries: each entry corresponds to a source page where an inbound link should be inserted. Read the suggested placement carefully: the agent has identified the most coherent section for the link to integrate naturally.

Paragraphs to insert: copy and paste the written paragraph directly into your CMS at the indicated location. The HTML link is already formatted with the optimized anchor, no editing needed in most cases.

Link already detected: if the agent flags that a link to your target page already exists on a source page, move on to the next recommendation. The agent never suggests duplicates.

No page found: if the agent finds no relevant source pages, it explains why and suggests topics to create in order to fill the semantic gaps in your cocoon.

Using the agent day to day

With every new publication: run the agent as soon as a new piece of content goes live to immediately identify existing pages that should link to it. It's the fastest way to integrate a new page into your cocoon.

During a content audit: prioritize your pillar pages, as they benefit most from internal inbound links to consolidate their authority.

After a content update: if you update an existing page with new thematic angles, re-run the agent to identify new inbound link opportunities tied to these new topics.

Pro tip 💡: Share the recommendation entries with your writers or content managers as editing tasks on the source pages. It's a high-ROI action that takes only a few minutes per page.

Going further

Combine this agent with other linking tools for a complete cocoon strategy:

  • Use the Advanced internal linking agent to simultaneously optimize outbound links from your target page.
  • Review Semji's internal linking recommendations to cross-reference the agent's suggestions with opportunities automatically detected by the platform.
  • Use the SERP behavioral analysis agent to verify that each source page is well positioned on the right format before inserting a link.

Important ⚠️: The site: command used by the agent relies on Google's index. Recently published or poorly indexed pages may not appear. If needed, supplement with a manual search in your CMS for recently published content.
